Our silver skin does not pass a metal detector. All silver skin onions will pass a colour sorting machine which will remove anomalies.

Total limit of defects and limit per item (by count):

    Parameter: Limit:
    Pipey Max. 5%
    Roots/tops > 4 mm Max. 5%
Skins (total loos and loos attached) Max. 10%
    Badly mechanical damaged Max. 5%
    Green (> 50 % green) Max. 5%
    Foreign matter (FM) Max. 0.01%
    Total defects Max. 20%

Note: The onions we supply is a raw material ready for further processing; we do not supply finished goods. Despite our careful inspections, the product may occasionally contain some contaminants. As a producer you always have to do a final inspection and take out any non-conformity. As also stated in our specs there is a maximum of 0.01% foreign matter possible

    Definitions of defects:
    • Pipey:

Dark green stripes due to chlorophyll, exceeding 50% of the surface area of the onion.

    • Foreign matter:

Any material not derived from the onion plant.

  • 2.3. Chemical properties

The onions will immediately after processing be covered with a preserving solution (brine) to contain at equilibrium.

    Chemical properties Equilibrium (Range)
    Salt 3.0 % w/w (2.0-3.5%)
    Acetic acid (E260) 2.5 % w/w (2.0-2.8%)
